With all of this extra time at home that everyone’s found themselves with, the BV Newsroom couldn’t help but wonder how people were coping with all of the changes and added stressors that students have had to endure. We decided to interview Javier Vega Fernandez, a freshman at Bella Vista High School, to see how he’s been keeping busy, or if he’s picked up any new hobbies during this time of quarantine.
What have you been doing to keep busy during quarantine? I’ve been studying history and geography.
Two topics that interested him were history and geography. Javier Vega Fernandez takes multiple online quizzes that pertain to history and geography to refresh his memory on the subjects daily. Each day, he’d say that he spends at least an hour taking said quizzes. The quizzes help him with making sure that he still remembers some facts about history, and also to make sure that he remembers all of the locations of the countries in the world.
What made you pick up that specific hobby? I got interested in it after watching a YouTube video about the game Civilization 5, which is about growing a civilization of your own.
The reason Javier Vega Fernandez got into his hobby is all because of a video he watched about a game. It piqued his interest, and then he realized that he was interested in learning more about geography and history, which ended up paying off. If he had never watched that video, then who knows if he would’ve picked up one of his favorite hobbies, and who knows how he would’ve been keeping himself busy throughout quarantine if it weren’t for that one video.
What’s one of your favorite things about your hobby? Being able to tell people that I know the location of every country in the world and see them become impressed.
Do you see it having benefits for you in the future? Possibly if I decide to go into geography, history, or anthropology. It could definitely help since I’m already interested in it.
Does your hobby help to relieve stress? Honestly, yes. It helps me get my mind off of everything else because it requires so much focus.
Would you recommend your hobby for people to try out and need something to do? I probably wouldn’t recommend it to my friends because I know they’re not into it, but I think if people are into geography they’d like history, or vice versa. And people who like mythology would probably enjoy history as well.
Javier Vega Fernandez picked up a rather interesting and uncommon hobby. There are multiple benefits to this, such as getting ahead in school and finding future careers he’s interested in and would enjoy if he decides to choose that career path. It also helps to relieve stress, and it impresses people with the uncommon ability to be able to locate all of the world’s countries.
