Their findings, published today in Nature Communications, could lead to the development of more accurate tests for evaluating kidney cancer patients as a guide for their treatment. The research team’s findings should help inform the design of large clinical trials that are planned to test how well new combinations of drugs work and how patients respond to them. “In clinical care we are always looking for the best tests available to predict outcomes in cancer patients,” said senior author Dr. Michel Sadelain, an assistant professor of pathology in the UCSF School of Medicine and member of the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. “Our work suggests that, with a few biomarkers and some statistical modeling, it is possible to accurately predict clinical outcomes in cancer patients, especially in the challenging setting of advanced disease.” According to the American Cancer Society, about 63,000 Americans will be diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2018, and 14,400 will die from it.
